Tribute to the East Side

On the East side of the remains of the Berlin wall in Friedrichshain between Ostbahnhof and Oberbaumbrücke art is to be found. The East Side Gallery is a permanent open air art gallery free for everyone to visit. After the German reunification in 1990 it was painted by 118 artist from 21 countries.

To me it's more than just a memorial of freedom. When I first visited the East Side Gallery a while ago, I was mesmerised by its wonderful colours, astonishing atmosphere and unique beauty.

It consists of much more than just paint: The artists' messages and ideas turn the 1.3 km walk on the Mühlenstraße into a horizon-widening ramble.

A few weeks ago it was announced that parts of the gallery will be removed in order to provide access to the river Spree for the tenants of a multy-storey building with luxury apartments which has not been built yet.

Apparently, the only thing that makes the world go round is money. Don't you also think it should be about something way more important, let's say ... art?
